Summer has arrived here on the West Coast of Canada. Gardens and parks
are bright with colour. The visiting humming birds have been a delight
to watch and inspired this months article. Please help me to keep a
record of where you all live. So far I have heard from people in Australia,
Canada, USA, UK. New Zealand and Singapore. Where do you live? I really
would like to know.

Feature Article   Humming Birds
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are over 400 known species of hummingbirds. They are the
smallest warm-blooded creatures in the world and they have the
fastest metabolism of any animal. They live on a razor’s edge
between starvation and vigour. Their hovering flight is the
most energy-demanding form of locomotion in the natural world
and to fuel it they have to consume their own body weight in
nectar every day - the equivalent of a 13-stone (90 kgs) man
downing 170 lbs(76 kgs) of hamburger!
Truly amazing birds.
Humming birds hold a number of records. Smallest nests, fastest
heartbeats and fewest feathers of any bird, they also have the
best memories, knowing exactly how many flowers are in their
territories and when they were last visited. I would love to have
a memory like that, I would not spend part of each day looking for
 something I had in my hand earlier on.
What do they Eat
Hummingbirds usually drink nectar (sugar water) from flowers.
While the bird is drinking the flower’s nectar, some pollen
sticks to its chin. The pollen falls off at the next flower
it visits, and pollinates the flower. They lick on an average,
of thirteen licks a second of nectar. They return to the same
food source year after year.
Humming Birds have long beaks and tongues to match flowers
they feed on. However, they need more than just sugar to
survive. Hummingbirds eat every ten minutes to keep up with
their high metabolism. They also need protein. That’s why
they eat small bugs inside flowers, and sometimes pick bugs
out of spider webs for food. In early spring, before the
flowers bloom, hummers will follow Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers.
These woodpeckers peck holes in trees to get sap. The hummer
can lick the sap and eat the bugs around these holes!
The hummers that live in Florida migrate to Texas, flying
across the Gulf of Mexico They have to eat enormous amounts
of nectar before they leave, gaining 50% of their body
weight in fat.
Nesting:
Male hummers set up a territory near good nectar flowers,
and won’t let any other hummers inside their territory,
and they’ll even chase away blue jays, bees, and large
moths. While the male is defending his territory, the
female spends 1 week building a nest out of spider webs,
plant fluff, and lichens, about the size of an English
Walnut. They are sometimes reworked and used year after
year. The whole nest is less than 5 cm wide (2 inches)
When her nest is ready, she flies to the male’s territory
to mate. He does not help to raise the young at all.
Humming birds don't pair like some other birds. The male
mates with as many females as possible but the female does
choose the male.
Stretchy nests
Ruby-throated Humming-birds nest as low as 5 feet or as
high as 50 feet but normally about 18-20 feet. The female
lays two white eggs about the size of a black-eyed  pea.
They are laid 2-3 days apart and ncubation begins when the
first egg is laid, therefore they hatch 2-3 days apart.
It takes 12-14 days for the eggs to hatch and the nestlings
stay in the nest for 18-22 days. The oldest bird remains
in the area of the nest until the youngest bird is ready
to fly. As they grow, the babies get too big for the nest,
but since it is made of stretchy spider webs, the nest will
stretch to fit around the babies. After a short time the young
are just like any other bird, competition for the food.
Flight:
Flight of a hummingbird is quite unique. They can fly right,
left, up and down, backwards and even upside down. The
structure of their wing is stretchy at the shoulder but
stiff at the wrist. Hummingbirds holds their bodies upright
and move their wings in a thin figure eight. They move their
wings about fifty times a second.
Their feet are used for perching. For a hummingbird to leave
a standing position they only move their wings, no pushing
off with their feet. They are so small that their wings can
make them mobile.
Grooming
Hummingbirds enjoy grooming themselves. They use the oil
from the gland near their tail. They use this oil on their
wings, stomach, tail feathers and back. They use their
claws to comb their heads and necks.
Hummingbirds do sleep in a position with their neck retracted
and their head forward. Their bill is pointed up at a sharp
angle. If the weather is cold the hummingbirds will reserve
energy and go in to an inactive state.
My name is Linda Offenheiser and I live in North Central
Michigan, USA. I have one husband, five kids, seven grandkids
and two Labrador Retrievers. We live in a lovely rural area
that's big on trees and short on noise!
I've been working on the Internet for about two years and
have learned a lot of stuff the hard way ~ by making mistakes!
I've learned that mistakes are really good things because
they help us grow and expand our knowledge.
One of the greatest benefits of the Internet is all the
wonderful people you meet that otherwise would forever
remain strangers. The Internet doesn't have to be cold and
impersonal as long as you have your own little community of friends.
My business is Stress-Free Copy which is a copy writing
and editing service for online entrepreneurs. I have great
fun with it! I also publish a weekly ezine called All the
Write Stuff! That is a total labor of love. I love family,
nature, dogs, blueberries and sunsets. I hate turnips,
arrogance, cruelty and all biting insects! That about sums
it up! Warm regards Linda
Rex here from Australia. I just read your news letter
and see you mention the fear of No 13. Well I guess you
know ships tend to have no number 13 cabin, but what surprised me
was when we lived in a Town about 100 mile south of Berri
here called Murray Bridge there was no number 13's in the
streets. Have a good day, Rex.
