Welcome to all new subscribers. Without readers a
newsletter is pointless if you like what you read here send it to a friend. Here on the West Cost, October is a time to clean
up in the garden and We cut down two trees and removed many branches and saplings to provide light and space to other
trees and plants. It is surprising how much room a tree takes up when it is laying across the lawn
and not verticle. I
made good use of the chain saw my sons bought me for Christmas one year. How easy our life is today with tools to help us.
Imagine taking down a large tree with a hand saw.
I look forward to receiving your suggestions for subjects to research. Tell me what amazes you.
Water
~~~~~
About 97% of the earth's water is held in the oceans, The rest is locked in glaciers or stored in lakes and aquifers.
Before it becomes drinkable, ocean water takes a long complicated journey. For life on earth to exist at all,
water must be drinkable and a big part of the process is rainfall.
It's a cycle
Every year heat from the sun draws up about 400,000 cubic kilometers of water from land and ocean into the atmosphere.
Our water is recycled in the 10 to 20 kilometers closest to the earth. It is then distributed around the globe by wind
systems. They are created because of the way the earth spins on its axis and because some parts of the earth’s
surface heat up more than others. This keeps the atmosphere in a constant state of movement.
Think about that, next time you complain "It's raining again"
We only have ten days supply
On average the water contained in the atmosphere all around the world is enough for only about ten days supply.
Our drinking water truly is a part of a very fine balancing act. Water is the only abundant substance found on
earth that exists simult aneously in the same locality in three different states – sold, liquid and gas.
The atmosphere is full of extremely small particles – such as dust, smoke and sea salt. As a parcel of air
cools, water vapour condenses on the tiny nuclei. Minute water droplets then become visible in the form of clouds.
Water is 800 times denser than air but each droplet is so small and light it can float in the air currents. A
light fluffy cloud may well contain from 100 to 1000 tons of moisture.
Considering all that is required to deliver a clean, adequate supply to the tap, water is a real bargain. For less than
a penny a gallon, water providers pump local groundwater and/or secure an imported supply, maintain and improve water system
infrastructure, conduct water quality tests, treat and/or filter water supplies, read meters, send bills, answer customer
calls, and provide conservation information to the public
Canada may be considered a freshwater-rich country. On an average annual basis, Canadian rivers discharge close
to 9% of the world's renewable water supply, while Canada has less than 1% of the world's population. Can you imagine
a city without water? We use it for drinking, cooking, and for other
household needs. Water is also needed
to clean our streets, fight fires, fill public swimming pools, and water lawns and gardens. And then, where would this
water go without a sewerage system?
Water Facts:
Each day humans must replace 2.4 litres (5.04 pints) of water, some through drinking
and the rest taken by the body from the foods eaten.
On average a person uses 343 litres (89.18gallons) of water per day. (N.A.)
About 83% of our blood is water. It helps digest our food, transport waste, and control body temperature.
In the developing countries, 80% of illnesses are water related Worldwide water withdrawals from water bodies have risen
from 250 cubic metres/person/year in 1900 to over 700 cubic metres today. How long can this be sustained?
One litre (2.1 pints) of oil can contaminate up to 2 million litres (520,000 gallons) of water. Dispose of it carefully.
Approximately 10 litres (2.6 gallons) of water is required to manufacture 1 litre (2.1 pints) of gasoline.
Approximately
295,000 litres (76,700 gallons) of water is required to produce 910 kilograms (2006 pounds) of paper.
The Great
Lakes, straddling the Canada-US boundary, contain 25% of the world's fresh water in lakes.
One out of every three Canadians and one out of every seven U.S. residents depend on the Great Lakes for their water.
Toilets (while consuming nearly one quarter of our municipal water supply) use over 40% more water than needed.
Many homes loose more water from leaky taps than they need for cooking and drinking.
Residential indoor water use in Canada: No doubt similar numbers in the USA
A 5-minute shower with a standard shower head uses 100 litres of water.
(26 gallons)
A 5-minute shower with a low-flow shower head uses only 35 litres of water
(9.1 gallons)
During the summer, about half of all treated water is sprayed onto lawns and gardens.
A single lawn sprinkler spraying 19 litres per minute (4.94 gallons) uses 50% more water in just one hour than a combination
of ten toilet flushes, two 5-minute
showers, two dishwasher loads, and a full load of clothes.
From Dee Scrip
Recently I was confronted with the inevitable lay-off and so decided to begin to search for a home
based business that would replace my salary and thus create a smooth transition. After extensive research and making
a few mistakes (mostly as a result of being naive to internet business, and which I am too
embarrassed to tell you about),
I finally narrowed it down to two that I could be passionate about and that were considered to have tremendous income potential
-- telecommunications and health & wellness. Both have enabled me to help others (my true passion) both financially
and physically while working from home!
I have been publishing Cat Tails since July 2002, After teaching classroom music
for six years, I eventually gravitated to the legal field, probably influenced by my work in a law school during college.
Beginning as a legal secretary,
then as a paralegal, I worked for several years in legal management. I have always
had varied interests and talents and have tried to learn all I can in every environment in which I found myself.
I started my own accounting service in
November 2003, which gives me the opportunity to devote more time to my first love--animals,
cats in particular. I do a considerable amount of volunteer work with a cat rescue group in my area, Birmingham,
Alabama. I also have a wonderful time publishing my newsletter, Cat Tails. It contains all kinds of
information
about kitties--always with humor and fun. It's a fr e e weekly ezine, and if you love cats I would love to have
We’ve all seen message boards and they are 2 dimensional and static. My On Line Magazine,
is a vibrant way of displaying information in the form of a digital magazine. The response has been fantastic but as with
all projects like this the more people who get involved the better the experience gets. I started with the Xbox mainly because
I have one but after requests I started the playstation magazine. My have plan is to branch out to all the major consoles
and PC but I am currently seeking sponsorship to do this so I can to keep this service free.
